THE QUEEN'S VARIETY TROUPE.
This oxcellent troupe opened at the Prince of Wales Theatre last night before a good house, including a comfortably-filled dress circle. The performances did not belie the reputation that preceded the troupe to this city, livery member is, without doubt, perfect in his line, and with the assistance of a good orchestra a capital evening's entertainment is provided. Mat Eiley opened with | one of his admirable Irish character songs, in which he appeared to advantage, and was warmly applauded. Harry Braham followed, ami was encored in his admirable swell impersonations. He is not at all unlike Rickards in his style, and he at once established , himself in the favour of his audience. Miss i Lizzie Watson was greeted with an ovation i on entering, indicating that her merits were I not unknown to her audience. She sang with her famous freshness and pleasant j vivacity. Her rendering of "Larry Doolan " I was especially successful. Alick O'Brien, the I negro melodist and contortionist, was at j home again on the Auckland boards, and the applause of the audience showed that he j was not forgotten. His side-splitting perj formances kept up a continual roar of j laughter. _ The first part closed shortly I before nine, after systematic encores, '■ (which seemed to have been calculated on), | with a comic duet by •Mr and j Mrs Braham, which was undoubtedly the j best thing of the evening. In the second j part Mr C. T. Baker made his debut with j considerable success. The other performers ', appeared to advantage, and tho gymnastic : performances by Madame Blanche and Mons_ ; Hamew excited wonder and admiration. j The company is, without doubt, all that it i professes to be—a first-class A rariety Troupe.
