The team arrived early this morning. Cotton and King missed their passages at Lyttelton. Play commenced at 11 o'clock. Dunedin won the toss, and went in first. The weather is splendid. Sweete commenced bowling, and Mears put one leg for two and another fox one. Robinson then bowled a maiden. Mears made one off Sweete, and two ofi Robinson, and an over. Both men were playing carefully. Sweete next bowled, a maiden, which was followed by Robinson. The next ball (Mears), was clean bowled out by Sweete ; one wicket for six runs. Allen was then sent in, who put his first in the slips for one, and then another clean over the bowler's head, which was well fielded, one run only being obtained. Sweete's third ball took Allen s bails with a beautiful ball } two wickets for eight runs. McDonnell then went in ; Robinson bowled another maiden. McDonnell then cut from Sweete for one, but succumbed to the next ball, three wickets for nine. Macfarlane now came up to the scratch and took Robinson' 3 last ball, which he carefully blocked. - , Lambert, who had been in some time, looting round for a slant, at last made a run off Sweete's last ball. . *•• A leg-bye was then run, making the score eleven. >r Rol.iuson bowled another maiden to Macfarlane, who then put one to leg for two. Lambert picked up courage and played Sweete's first ball over the bowler s head for three, and Robinson's first for a couple, and another to square leg for one, and then received a maiden from Sweet. Macfarlane now put Robinson's first away for three. Lambert played the other three carefully.
Mccfarlane followed his example and played a maiden, and Lambert another, Macfarlane another. Lambert then retired from Robinson's second ball for nine. Four wickets down for 24 runs. Downes then went in, and sent his first for three.
Macfarlane put the ball to leg for one, and retired with Sweete's second ball, making a total of six, five wickets for 2S runs. _ Garwood came to the rescue, the Dunedinltes looking rather blue, while Auckland became proportionately hilarous. Downes skied liobinson's first, which was well held by Yates, making six wickets down for 2S.
Clarke now handled one willow, and Garwood the other.
Three balls were disposed of safety. A leg-bye was run off Sweete last"ball. Clarke put his first ball to the on for one, and another to the off for one and another. Runs were coming very slowly. Garwood hit one hard to long leg, but was mulled by Dixon. A leg-bye followed. Garwood put Sweete's last to long leg well in the air, but was again pulled by Auckland,
Clarke poked one between the wickets and ran off.
Garwood, who evidently meant work, put another to long leg for two, and followed by a single to the off and another to the on. Buckland next went to the bowling and did a maiden.
Clarke drove Sweete's first for two. Garwood sent Buekland's first to the on for two, and then a single in the slips, and Sweete's first to leg for three, and single to leg from Buckland's second, and a couple off Sweete's last.
Buckland's next ball took Clark's stumps, seven wickets for 53.
Thompson took Clark's place and blocked his first three balls).
Lankham took Sweete's place at the bowling, and Garwood put it clean over the fence and obtained four.
Thomson poked one for a single and Garwood a single. Garwood cut Lankham's last for a couple. ■ Sweete went on again. Garwood sent his last to leg, but was beautifully fielded by Yates, and no run was obtnined.
Thompson sent Buckland's last to Ion" off for two. &
Robinson took Sweete's place and bowled a maiden, and Bnckland another. Robinson sent another and Buckland another to Garwood, who sent Robinson to leg, and ran for four, one short, and another over fence for three.
Sweete now went at it again, puttin» on great speed, and the second ball clean bowled Garwood, who exhibited fine play, making three runs for 70. Eight wickets were down.
Rhodes took Garwood's place. Thomson made two off Buckland's first. Sweete bowled a maiden, Thomson then stole one off Bnckland. Rhodes sided his next, which was cau«ht by Alpe, 9 wickets for 73. Glenn, tho last man, now went to the wicket and played a maiden off Buckland. Glenn got another off Sweete. Thomson followed Sweete with another. Thomson sent Buckland's Hast to long off" for three, retired for ten runs before Sweote's last, making a total score of the Dunedin first innings 77. The adjournment for luucheon then took place.
