TESTIMONIAL TO MR J. C. FIRTH.
A number of our leading citizens have taken steps to testify their appreciation of the public spiritedness of Mr J. C. Firth in giving the use of his steam fire-engine at all fires where it can be of service. Mr Thomas Henderson, with Mr Yon dor Heyde and Mr Luckie, M.G.A., were deputed to present it, and this afternoon waited on Mr Firth with that object. The following is a copy of the testimonial:—
" To Josiah Clifton Firth, Esq." "Dear Sir,—Now that fhe danger from the late disastrous fire in Lower Queen-street has passed away it remains a duty for us, your neighbours, 'and fellow citizens, to convey to you the high and lasting sense we entertain of the gratuitous service and assistance accorded to us by the liberal use of the water supply and steam-power of your mill, together with the services of your employes, not only on the occasion of the fire itself, but for so many days afterwards (thereby enabling us to save valuable property) and whilst smouldering ruins were still in a condition, threatening danger to the neighbouring premises. The great value of this assistance is not only fully appreciated by all of us, but most highly estimated, because of the prompt and unselfish manner in which you responded to our call for help and rendered us those arduous and costly services. As we understand you decline to accept any more substantial proof of our gratitude we take this means of placing on record ourjj thanks for your kindness, and with our earnest wishes for your prosperity amongst us wc beg to subscribe ourselves your obliged and grateful friends :— 11. and ivl., Stone Brothers, C. W. Binney, J. and J. Soppett, R. Gratten, M. Niccol, H. B. Morton, 801 l Brothers, Levi W. Eaton, 11. F. Anderson and Co., J. S. Macfarlane, E. L. Bucholz and Co.
Mr Firth cordially thanked the deputation for the testimony of their esteem, and assured them he was glad to be in a position to render assistance on such occasions, which concerned them all.
