The inter-colonial rifle match was won by New South Wales, beating Arictoria by 65 points and New Zealand by 103 points. The highest scores from New Zealand were Small, of. Auckland, and Christie, of Otago. Small and Christie made 85 each. For Victoria, Whalley made 89, and Hanney 88. For Sydney, Freeman scored 91, Lamb 90. The shooting was generally indifferent on the part of the New Zealand men, the local conditions being totally different to what they had been accustomed to, as also were the ranges. Many of the New Zealand representatives, from the 1") orthern Island, were only landeda few hours before the firing commenced. The total scores were :— Sydney 1586 Victoria • 1521 New Zealand 1483 The protest entered against Romncy in the Melbourne Cup was dismissed. 50,000 persons were on the course when the Melbourne Cup was run for. The bookmakers won largely.
Joe Thompson has bought Don Juan for £2,000. He won £12,000 on various events.
Parliament will be prorogued next week. The Assembly adjourn till Monday next to allow time for the Council to pass measures.
