[Per Anglo-Australian Telegram Company.]
NAPIER.
This day.
Arrived : Rangatira, from Poverty Bay. The Turanganui district provincial election resulted as follows :—Johnson, 95 ; Wvlie 11. . '
The session Court sat yesterday, but nothing was done. Mr Locke, who arrived by the Rangatira, put a stop to the proceedings.
A range for the Colonial prize-firing has been selected at Greenmeadow, about three miles from Napier by the new Taradale road. It is very extensive, with room for eight or ten targets abreast, and is laid down with grass. There are no intersecting watercourses, and hills in the back-ground will stop bullets.
About two thousand acres have been taken up in fifty and one hundred aGre sections on deferred payments in the blocks set apart under the Hawke's Bay Special Settlements Act. Surveyors are urgently needed, and not to be had. The Customs receipts for October amount to L394S f<f compared with L 2715 for October 1572. The increase is solely due to the ' steady expansion of ordinary trade. Attempts are being made to resuscitate the Jockey Club, and hold a race in March.
The earthworks on the Paki Paki railway are not finished. Considerable delay will, be caused by the difficulty of obtaining timber for the bridges. Tenders are again called for a supply of timber for the tramway between Wiiipukuran and 70-mile bush, to be opened December Ist.
The Rangatira arrived from Poverty Bay. She leaves for the South at four p.m. . Mr Woodbine Johnston, brother of the Hon. Randal Johnston, has been elected to represent Poverty Bay in the Auckland Coiincil by a large majority. Edwin Wood, Collector of Education rates, Gisborne, has been arrested on a charge of embezzlement.
The Lands Court is now sitting. Wi Pere, a discontented native of Henare Matua's party, is urging the natives to stop the proceedings." It is thought, however, that things will pass off quietly. Reports from petroleum springs are favorable. A large number of fresh shares have been|taken up.[There is strong desire felt that Dr Hector should be sent to report upon them.
