THE SPECIMEN-STEALING CASE.

This day. The specimen-stealing cases are on for hearing before the Justices to-day. The first case was that of John Hawkins, charged with stealing £75 worth of specimens belonging to the Dauntless and Sink-to-Puse Company. Catherine Gleeson, a woman who lived with the accused as his wife, deposed to finding a bag of specimens in March la3t in a manure heap, and afterwards some specimens under tho verandah, both of which she brought into tho bedroom. He threatened to cut her throat for touching them. He took tho specimens afterwards and went to Golden Hilltoget some mullock, which he put into a bag with the specimens. He put the specimens into a kit and weighed them, and mixed them with mullock. Next morning she noticed the stuff gone. On the morning of the election she turned round upon accused on account of ill-treatment. Prisoner knocked feer down at Parawai when she had not spoken to him. The quarrel was about another woman. When she came home she communicated with the police. She wanted to bring him to justice after he struck her.
Charles Btinter, carter, deposed having carted a bag to Eaithby and Muir's for prisoner.
William Hope Muir produced a register having crushed stuff for Hawkins, said to come from the Pride of Somerset claim, of which he represented himself owner. The stuff weighed 126 lbs. and produced 70 ozs. of amalgam, when molted yielding 30 oza. C dwts. of gold. Ho purchased- it for £77. The case is now proceeding.
The Alburnia trials yielded 36 oz. lSdwts. The Bondigo Independent has obtained G ounces.
The Hazelbank tribute crushed six tons for ti yield of 17 ozs. 13 dwts. 12 grains. The Crown Princo has started driving on No. 3 reef, which shows gold.
