NORTH SHORE.
From an early hour to-day it was evident that the '' other side" of the water woiild receive the public patronage to an extraordinary extent, and even the morning boats were well filled with passengers bent on breathing the sea breeze and strolling on the beaches of the North Shore. As announced by us yesterday excursion boats were running to Stokes' Point, and though a little rnisad^ venture rather threw the company out, and prevented them from fairly testing the popularity of Stokes' Point, still enough evidence was afforded that this will yet become a favourite resort for pic-nic parties. It appears that the " Enteipiise," which had been told off specially for that service during the holiday, had been in some way or another got up on tho beach dmhig the night on the top of high water, so that she was not to the front at 9 o'clock to take the trip announced. However the manager of the company had '
the "Devonport » rapidly undev^wT^ at a quarter-past nine she steamed fta large number of excursionists to L? 1 Point. In her second trip at + eH was crowded, but some arrangemJ? 1./ \ taking over furniture to Cl . made the previous evening, nccessitlfr being taken off again, and consideS £ er satisfaction was caused to intending rT Isgers for Stokes' Point. However liff**' Captain Casey's steamer Gemini tookT ly gen for the Point on her way to ifi^ and a very large number in this wit ad' conveyed in default of the Perry Or J Vere being up to time. Considering the diffipa,ny thus thrown in the way it iTsnr!* what a large munber of people rnanagft find their way to Stokes' Point, ami Vclear if that district is only treated i W spirit of fairness that it will become not. V a most popular and delightful outlet to yy /ens bent on holiday keeping, but becoml" also one of the best contributors to th* ceipts of the Ferry Company. re'
NORTH HEAD. But the excursion trips to Stokes lv L had no effect on the crowds thronmil,, ?* Avhat has hitherto been spoken of m%, North Shore. The boats to Flagstaff w Devonport were groaning under tl • burthens, and the military bands and S taiy uniforms gave an animation to tl, scene not often witnessed. The Ot->kiil Company with its fine band playing sni,? stirring strains passed over in the forenoon and .about halt-past one Captain Burns f the Royal Company, who has taken , great interest in the getting up o f * military "spectacle" at the North Shore accompanied by his men and a W number of others, passed over and as we go to press the military pageant wia with all the pomp and circumstance of glorious (mimic) war is proceeding i n | presence of an immense concourse of specta tors. Altogether the several North SW districts have had to-day probably a lareer population than ever before since the place has been trodden by the foot of the white man. THE DOMAIN. That ever favourite resort of holiday makers—the Domain—was well patronised Beneath every shady tree a pleasant family party was gathered, and afc frequent intervals picnics of larger dimensions. Up fl three o'clock upwards of ICO persons had paid for admission to the Society's gardens and many more were expected between thai hour and sundown, when the birds go to roost and the gates are closed. The gardens are now in full iioral beauty, and the bouquets sold at the entrance at Is each found ready purchasers. The young rooks were epecially objects of curiosity to the children. These birds (lately imported) have divided themselves into two colonies, one founding its home in the gardens, and the other in Mr Turner's paddock, near theMauukau Road, and in both cases they are a thriving and prosperous community.
