The Melbourne G-as Company's halfyearly profits amount to £11,372. A dividend has been declared at the rate of 8 per cent. : The G-errnan corvette Nyinphe will leave here for Sydney to-day, if the weather should prove favourable. Six out of seven children of one family in North. Gripps Land have died of diptheria. Sugars firm; white crystals have been sold at £40; 2000 bags of brewing cystals, ex Maggie Leslie, have beeu sold privately at from £36 to £38; malt brought 9a., duty paid; salt is in demand at £& all round.
The Hannah Nicholson's teas have not been sold, only 100 boxes changed hands at Is 3d ; pig iron has been sold at £5 155., a portion to arrive; Martell's brandy, dark, considerable parcels at 6s 7£d.
At an auction of Java, Natal, and Bourbon sugars prices were well maintained. White sugars are firmer; 170 tons crystals were bought in one line by the Sugar Company, at £40. There was a good feeling in the market. January 24 Captain Collard has been committed for trial at the Police Court on account of the loss of the Sussex. He reserved his defence
Victorian wheat has been sold at from ss. to ss. 2d.
The Southern Insurance Company's report recommends no dividend, in view of the risks to run.*
January 25. The Southern Insurance shareholders have convened a meeting at Scotb'a Hotel, on Tuesday, to consider, the position of the company.
