MERCY TO THE FALLEN.

To the Editor of the Evening Star. Sib,—l suspect " A Mother of a Family " means to be sarcastic, and I think it is hardly fair. Few will deny that it is a christian and charitable act to try and save these wretched girls. No one will think themselves too good or pure for the wprk who have read the history of the Magdalen. "When, then, people grant i. is right to try and save them the question arises, how is it to be done ? and we say, we who have worked in this most sad field of mission work, where discouragements crop up at every step, our only hope is to remove them from old associates and bad influences, if we can, and the only way of doing it at present is to get kind and charitable ladies, who reside far from town, to take them as servants. We tell these good Samaritans the histories of the girls, and so no deception is practised, and it rests with themselves whether they choose to risk taking them into their homes or not. For my part I think it quite safe to try some of them, if they can be persuaded to go ; but I should hardly recommend the experiment to " The Mother of a Family." As a rule it is better for them to go where there are only grown up, steady people. Yours, &c., MAEY A. CoLCLOUGH.
