The following members have been gazetted officers in tho Thames Volunteers ;—-Thomas Leitch Murray, Thames Scottish Volunteers, to be captain; George William Bazley, Thames Naval Volunteers, to be lieutenant; and Archer Charles Croft, ME C SE, to be honorary assistant surgeon in the same corps. The recruits of the Hobson Eifle Company were drilled last evening in the Albert Barracks, under command of Captain Burns.
The Engineers assembled in force at tho Albert Barracks last evening for drill, and were put through a variety of movements by Captain Dargaville. They are improving in their drill.
Many of the Volunteers who hare been unsuccessful in making the number of points requisite to enable them to reach a higher class, saj that the clouds of dust ontheEifleEange, at times utterly prevent them from seeing the target. It is of that impalpable kind which rises in clouds whenever trodden upon, and fills the eyes and nostrils of the riflemen. The range will certainly have to be grassed before next season, and something of the couch grass kind, which lies close to the ground would probably be the best,
It has been suggested that now the Volunteer Engineers have arrived at a state of efficiency as regards the ordinary drill of soldiers of the line, the time has arrived when it is desirable that they should be instructed in the higher branches of the profession of arms, and in such special duties as engineers are expected to carry out. The firing for the representatives at the Colonial prize firing, to be held at Christchurch, took place yesterday at the range. The firing was anything but good. The regulations allow eight competitors to Auckland, but they must each have made the minimum scoro of 40 points. The result is that only one—Captain Morrow, A.E.V.—qualified himself by making a score of 40. The following is the score : —
