THE VOLUNTEER CHRONICLE.
EIFLE HATCH
Last Saturday afternoon a Riflo match camo off at the Mount Eden Range between five of Auckland Volunteer Engineers and five picked men from Nos. 1 and 2 Naval Companies. It was intended by the Engineers at first to firo off the match with No. 2 Company only ; but they (the Navals) mistook the wording of the challenge, and thougtt it was for the two companies, and picked their best shots accordingly. Victory declared itself for the Navals by a majority of 33 points. The highest score was made by W. J. Dufaur, of the Engineers, who obtained 48 points. A nasty wind was blowing from the target to the competitor?, which raised a good deal of dust, showing the necessity (when the proper time comes) to lay the target down in grass. After the match was over, Lieutenant Kitchen challenged both companies separately for the same stakes (a keg of ammunition), whioh was not accepted. Below are the scores :—
