MELBOURNE.
January 3
The ship Sussex, Capt. Collard, from London to this port has been wrecked at Barwon Heads. All the passengers luggage with the cargo worth £30,000 is lost. Her loss is attributed to the deficiency in code of signals by night. The third officer, Mr. O'Flaherty, and five of the crew were drowned while endeavouring to makethe shore through breakers.
January 4. Tookey's shares offering at £15. The wreck of the Sussex has been sold for £6,800.
January 5.
At the sales of fleece wool former rates have been fully sustained, lGd to 2_§d. Maize sold at 3s 9d per bushel; oats at from 3s 2d to 3s 6d.
A later telegram says that some Java sugars were auctioned, and realized from £21 6s to £28 10s, and that maize is scarce and advancing, sales having been made at 3s IOM. A prisoner is dying in the Pentridge prison from brutal injuries received, and the case is being investigated.
