BEEACH OF AEMS ACT.
Walter George Pratt was arraigned on a charge of having sold two pounds of gunpowder, ten pounds of shot, and two boxes of percussion caps, to Maoris without having first obtained tho requisite licence. He pleaded not guilty, and as in the preceding case was defended by Mr Hesketh. Frank O'Brien, detective officer^ deposed to having taken the ammunition produced from two Maoris in the neighbourhood of Wangarei. They told him that they had got it from tho watchmakor, meaning prisoner. Haki Wkonga-Whonga deposed that he and another native went to prisoner's place Fat Wangarei. They asked him if ho had much powder. He said he had. They then bought powder, shot, and caps, and witness paid for them £1 in gold. The other Maori paid the same amount. This was in last November.
This witness was subjected to a long and severe cross-examination by Mr Hesketh,
