The grand jury ignored the bills against Frederick Matchett for -wounding with intent, and William M'Leod for indecent assault. William Brown, for larceny, was convicted ; Maria Webb pleaded guilty of bigamy ; Joseph Cantor was convicted of robbery from the person. The Judge commented on the increase of crime, and advocated whipping all offenders against females. Mr Hallenstein, Mayor of Queenstown, Mr Gr. B. Barton, and Mr Malaghan, are probable candidates for Mr Haughton's seat.
The Customs revenue for the year is £19-4,529, £50 less than last year. There is a heavy falling off in the first quarter, but a steady increase since.
The escort brought down 171,814; ounces.
The police boat has recovered the body of Peter Scryingeour. It was very much decomposed, and was found within a few yards of the- spot where the boat went down The Luna left Wellington for Dunedin. After being docked at the Port she will proceed to Wellington with the Maori prisoners now confined in gaol. January 8. Mr. W. A. Murray met his constituents at Tokomairiro on Thursday. A motion was carried approving of his conduct, and disapproving of the extravagant and reckless policy of the present Ministry. Arthur Anderson, a resident at the Clutha. has shot himself while in a state of temporary insanity. The following sentences have been passed in the Supreme Court: — Edward Clarke, forgery, eight months ; Arthur Dimock, forgery, two years j John Grey, attempted arson, three , years; John Grey, robbery from the person, four years; Maria Webb, bigamy, six months.
