DREADFUL ATTACK ON A LADY.

A district in the county of Surrey, known as the Devil's Jumps, haß been the scene of an extraordinary crime. On Saturday last a man named Kodway entered the house of Mr. Carmgton, a gentleman of position and an astronomer, and having obtained an interview with Mrs. Carington in the absence of her husband, stabbed her in a fearful manner with a large and strong clasp knife. On the servants coming in, Bodway escaped, but was apprehended after he had made desperate but ineffectual efforts to kill himself. He had inflicted on himself a number of wounds evidently aimed at the heart, but had failed in his purpose, and his life is not considered in immediate danger. It would also appear that Mrs. Carington's recovery is considered possible. The motive of the crime is said to be jealousy, Sodway having been a suitor of Mrs Carrington before her marriage with the present husband. The prisoner was taken before the magistrates at Farnham on Monday. Ann Langley, Mr Carrington's cook, was called, and said she saw Mrs Carrington going to the door after the bell rang, and noticed that she shut the door, which obstructed the view from the kitchen. This aroused the witness's suspicions, and she went round the house, when, she stated —1,, saw a man talking with her, whom I recognised as tho person I had previously seen on the hill. I also heard her refuse to give him something, which I believe was a little dog. In consequence of what the housemaid told me I went into the passage, and saw the prisoner and Mrs Carrington struggling together on the floor, the prisoner having his arm round Mrs Carrington, and the knife now produced in his hand.
