It is said that those who left in her were Alfred Prietor (a plumber in the employ of Messrs A and T Burt), two or three,of the Messrs Scrimeeour', and two other young men the song of Mr L rew, tailor. Mr Bruce (a plumber at Messrs Burt's), Mr Martin, and some of the Coxheads, were also reported, as haying been lost, but we have ascertained that none of the Messrs Coxhead were among the unfortunate young men. On the Maori reaching town news was brought by her that a man was seen pulling off from the shore towards what was found to be a boat that had sunk, and which was under water, the top of the mast only being visible. It was lifted on to the Maori and brought to town. Haifa dozen or so of caps and hats wereseennoating in the water from the deck of the Maori, and one cap was recovered. The Moori came up about ten minutes too late to be of assistance. We ' learn from enquiries made by Sergt. Bevan at Macandrew's Bay, that previous to the accident the boat was seen tacking backwards and forwards across the channel, with a fair wind. _ He also heard it said in the district that it was supposed there were nine on board and that there were no females among them, as had been reported in town. Also, that a man of the name of Edwards, and another of the name of Christie, saw the boat sink, and that fire of the number struck out for the shore ; that Edwards, on observing the accident, put off m his boat, but that they all sank before he could reach them. The accident occurred between tha beacon and the point below Macandrew's Jetty, at some time between three and four o'clock, and was not witnessed by his Honor the Superintendent, as was commonly reported. A steamer went to the spot later in the afternoon, with Sub-Inspector Thompson to take part in the work of searching for the bodies We learn at the last moment that it was believed seven had left in the boat, namely Messrs Drew (2), Scrimgeour (3), Bruce, Prictor ; that a person who saw the boat capzize was certain there were five in it, and believed there might have been more ; tkat two struck out for the shore, but sank before the boat that put off to their assistance reached the spot ; and that seven hats and caps were seen afterwards floating on the water. The police had recovered none of the bodies up till two o'clock this morning, when they left off the search, which will be resumed at seven o'clock.
