Novenaber 221—Walker yesterday. offered to fire Christie again for £1000 a side, and Christie's backer- expressed themselves willing to back bun lor another £100. Christie, however, fl itly refused to fire: again against Walker. The two competitors are to be entertained at a complimentary dinner this evening. November 23.—5.s Ahuriri left Oamaru for Dunedin at 10 30 a.m. yesterday. When off !'u__u strtck on a sunken rock. Vessel total loss. Crew, passengers, mails, and ship s papers saved.— Storm Bird left late last night to try and save cargo. — The Ahuriri was owned by Houghton of Dunedin, and was partially insured.
November 23, 7 p.m.—When off Fish reef the Ahuriri met with a strong S.W. wind. She kept running about a mile and a half from short., tuere being no sign of breakers. At Uve minutes past five she struck on the reef lightly. In a few minutes all the compartments except the fore one filled. The boats Were immediately lowered, aud the lifeboat, in ojiarge of the chief pifioer,, wm sent ,ashqre witli the ladies and a few' other passengers^ wuo lauded safely. On the boat's ret Ugh, iney f.mnd the sea breaking over the wreck, he remainder of the crew and passengers got ■mfc a.ihore. with tlie mails and ship-papers only. At midnight, tbe wreck was visible, but it 3.30 a.m. not a vestige was to be seen. Some, passengers arrived by coach th-s morning. <*n receipt of the uews, Mr. Houghton neiit the Storm bird to assist, but nothing could be done.
