Melbourne Ci:p.—A sweepstakes of 20 sovereigns each, 10 forfeit, or 5 if declared, with 300 sovereigns added. The winner of any handicap race of the value of 200 sovereigns, after the declaration of the weights, to carry 5 lbs. extra; of Wo or more euch races, 8 lbs. extra ; of any such race the value of 100 sovereigns, 3 lbs. extra; of two or more such races, 5 lbs. extra. After one or two false starts, a roar of " off" from the hill told that the 23 horses had commenced the struggle for the Melbourne Cup. Coming up the straight to the Stand Saladin led for a distance, but was soon headed, and on passing the btand barbelle was first, The Pearl second, and the Baron third, with Saladin Praetor, Pyrrhus, and Irish King. Barbelle fell off. At the turn beyond the stand a collision occurred between Lord of Lyrine and another horse, both jockeys being thrown, but not materially injured; the other horses went sweeping, on, at the, river Saladin again getting a strong lead as far as the river bridge. Here the Pearl and Barbelle came up, strongly supported by Romula and Lapdog. Tn» Pearl, however, kept his pride of place, ana was never headed, winning by a full length. There was about the same distance between the second and third horses. A protest was entered by Thompson, who alleged that the jockey of the Pearl struck Romula on the nose during the race/ The protest wa3 .dis--.
