AUCKLAND DWING CLUB.

To the Editor of he Evening Stab.

Sia, —Although I ai only an " old fogey" —my boating victoie3 things of by-gone ages—my joints stiff-my limbs racked with rheumatism, ai.d n? head bald — besides having received the th'oe warnings of dissolu-tion-I cannot, withcit emotion, and a rush of blood to the head which makes me feel almost young again, ook upon the Einewy endeavours of the yoiug men who compose tho majority of the nembers of the Auckland Rowing Club as attempts in the right direction. Athletic execises of this kind are ealdilated not only to develop the muscles of the gymnasts, but mm the necessity of every aspirant for muscula1 honors to maintain rigid temperance, must teid immensely to prevent the excesses common to youth, and must malegally assist the efbrls of total abstainers. There are a great number of young men in this place would be a great deal the better for a quiet paddle on the "Waitemata; and 1 really do hope that this club, which has been started by _ the energy of a few gentlemen, will be only the avant courier of mam others. The competition between themsehes will be the very thing required, a3 my old experience tells me, to enable our dilatory iuckland men to sustain an honorable part it intercolonial matches ; and the early rising, temperance, and muscular exertion required before any young fellows can arrive at even mediocrity m the art, would tend much to improve our young fellows, both men tally and physietlly. I hope to see the boating matters of taia port put upon a far higher plane than they have as yet occupied, and regret that my increasing age andinfirmities prevent me iron taking any active part. —I am, &c, Jasot.
