Bt the barque Briton,' which arrived this morning after a good passage of twelve days, we have received papers to the sth instant. We give the following telegrams :— SYDNEY. Wednesday, 830 p.m.—At the quarter sessions held to-day, Arthur Hiel, for larceny, was sentenced to six months, and Martin Kenny, foi highway robbery, to five years' imprisonment, and Frederick Ratten, for embezzlement, to six months. —Dr. Thomas Beard, of Balmain, died yesterday evening whilst under the influence of chiorofortn, administered for the purpose of performing an operation upon him. —Mr. Clements, of Singleton, has been awarded the fifteen guinea priao by th» Aricultural on the water supply.—Henry L&uer, labourer, of Newcastle, is insolvent i liabilities £81, and assets £B.—At Mort'a wool nalei, prices ruled firm, over 150 bales were gold—greasy, from 6d to lOd $ fleeces, 14id to 17& d.
POLICE COURT.— Tuesday. [Before Thomas Beckham, Esq., E.M.] DEtTNKBNNESS. —Six offenders were fined — the usual alternatiye of imprisonment being allowed them. Absawlt.—Patrick Matthews, charged by Albert Carroll with assaulting him b.y striking him on the breast with his olenched fist, pleaded guilty. It appoared from the statement of prosecutor that the assault was committed in his own houee. —The prisoner was ordered to be imprisoned for one month, with hard labor.
Pbrjcby.—The case of Robert H. Stevenson, charged by S. J. Fernandez with having committed wilful and corrupt perjury in the case of "Fernandez v. Orosbie and others," was then called. — Mr. Sheehan applied for an adjournment, on account of the engagement of other counsel at another Court. —His Worship was very unwilling to allow the postpouetaenfc, as the accused party was in reality a prisoner, and deprived of his liberty until his trial. He also objected to the indefinite terms of the information. —Mr. Sheehan explained, and Bttid that Stevenson had not baen apprehended, and appeared on summons only. —His Worship then consented to adjourn the case until Tuesday next. The Goat Nuisance. —William Cox and Owen Cummins, for having goats tethered in a public street, were euch fined 10s. and costs. SUJJDAT LIQfOB Tbaffio. —Ellen Lawless was charged with committing n breach of the licensing Act, 1871, by allowing liquor to be sold in her house on Sunday, tho Bth instant, to persons not being bona Jide traveller? or residents in the houae. —Mr. Shechan, for the defence, pleaded guilty, but said that defendant was at divine service at the time, and men were admitted and supplied by young members of the family. He also pleaded on her behalf that she was a widow, and that rio charge had been brought against her for nine years.—lnspector Broham corroborated this statement as far as the character of the hou^e was concerned. —His Worship commented strongly on the eiil of the Sunday-selling o( alcoholio liquor, and he thought he would not be justified in imposing a less penalty than ten pounds, with costs. — —Denis Markham, charged with a similar offence, pleaded guilty. Mr. Joy submitted that though the liquor was supplied and drunk, no money passed, a* the parties wore friend? of th« publioau.. H«. il.O.. 5 1.i.
