MISSIONARY FOR GAOL AND HOSPITAL.

A Meeting- of the Protestant ministers of Auckland,-was held on October 9,.at the rooms of the • Young Men-s Christian Association., the Eight Rev. Bishop Cowie in the chair. There were present: -The Right Rev. President, Revs. Drs. Maunsell and Wallis, Revs. Messrs. Dudley, Berry, Waters, Macnicol, Davies- Bree, ■ 'Edger, Macdonald, and Rigg- — The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. — The Rev. R. Macnicol reported that the Presbyterian Ohureh was prepared to guarantee £30 towards the missionary's stipend. The candidates' names were then brought before the meeting. Twelve applications had been received. Of these, two only found proposers and seconders. Those were the R<?v. Thomas Hamer, and Mr. Brakenridge. On the vote being taker* ib was ascertained that the Rev. T. Hamer had a majority. -The Rev. T. Ifamer's name was then submitted alone, when it transpired that he had obtained less than the requisite two-thirds, of the votes of'the ministers present. Consequently, no appointment was made. —The reply of the Provincial Executive to the Memorial recently presented, was laid before the meoiing : —"Superintendent's office, Auckland, 19th September, 1871. Reverend Sir, —Referring to my letter of the 12th instant, in reply to the" memorial forwarded by you, I have the honor to state that the lowest, cost of a building, such as that required for the purposes of Divine worship at Mount Eden G-aol, will be between £300 and £400 5 and Government have at preent no : vote applicable to 'the work, —they will, however, bear the matter in mind iv framing the estimates for next year, and, if possible, provide for the same.—l am, &c, Hugh IJiUSK, Provincial Secretary.^Rev. J. T. Warlow Davies, M.A., Auckland."—^ Resolved, "That the' Bishop of Aul-kland and Mr. rWarlow Davies be requested respectively to remain in office as President arid Secretary of this conference of ministers, and be empowered, on the requisition of three of our ministers, to summon again a meeting of the Protestant ministers of this city."— The thanks of the meeting were tendered to the President and Secretary.

The Secretary presented the accounts duly receipted. ' These were passed—the balance of 5s to be handed over to the Youug Men's Christian Association.-—The conference was then adjourned, having been opened and concluded with prayer/ '-3 X . vV
