BEWARE.
To those iv the city of Auckland who aro disposed to make light of tlio element of ■■ death existing among us, we commend tho consideration of the following leading article ami extracts 'clipped 'from a contemporary in Buenos Ayres, a copy of which has been kindly handed to .US'. He it remembered that Buenos Ayres is! almost iv tho same latitude as Auckland, and as its namo imports has: been distinguished for its Biilubrity. Those Who seem to ignore, the necessity of snnator3 r reform in this city of stenches should' read tho , following, the latest, ft-onr Buenos Ayres, and then laugh at death.. TIME OP TRIAL. Tho present is the most awful crisis that Buenoß Ayres has over known. ; within} the last 40 days ten thousand of our citizens hnv.e, perished, and 100,000 more havo fled froiu tlie ill-fatod city. How long this dread trial may yet last it is impossible to say,, but let us hope that the Almighty will look upon the misery of this Christian people and tttiy! the arm of tho Destroying Angel. Never at any moment could there ,(be afforded . a iinore convincing proof of the utter helplessuoss of. more human agency, to combat an ; e,vil of bucli magnitude. It is in vain .to blame the. authorities for weakness and pusillanimity,1 when the stoutest hearts quail. Not that wo , can approve of,the action of the National and Provincial authorities, but even if they were to-work miraclps their, efforts would be comparatively idlei ■■..]■ _~\ -~__
It is now proposed; by tho Popular Com; initteo. to evacuate the city en masse. If tho Governments, National and Provincial, would for ouce uct in union nud spare no pains to throw up a wooden encampment outside the town the measure would, doubtless, have a good effect. YY hatr better purpose could be devised for the 100 millions of Dominguez's loan, now lying idle in Bank ? There, are already 50 huts erected at San Martin, but we gi-isve to learn that the unfortunate people arc coming back to town, rather than roinain thero. Somo "say there 'was no food provided for them.
Why not employ-10,000 able-bodied meu to prolong the Western Railway ? All the people want is fresh air and food, both of which are abundant enough in tho Western camp's.
Anolhor suggestion niado to Government •is to accept tbe services pro tern, of .thoso medical graduateslofiforeigh'univorsities who have not, yet obtained diplomas hero. Itl is' an absurdity to see many such men at present prohibited from practising, while many of the nativo doctors aro said to have lied. YYe areauthorised to contradict, the aspersions thrown upon the city -'clergy ;' 23 of them have already laid downitheir.lives in their sacred calling.
At lirst the project of suspending all business was opposed by tho foreign merchants, but now wc have assurances from all quarters that they would approve of such a step, say for 30 days. It. is officially stated that of 30,000 people remaining iv tlio city no fewer than 7,000 are sick! A'
Since wo took leave of our readers, on Sunday week last, the plague has continued, to rajo with daily increasing violence. Although 15,000 people have left tho city sinco that date, tbe death-rate strides upward, and during last week nearly 4,000 persons died of the plaguo alone, other deceases; being of a normal rate. On Sunday the highest death-rate till then 504, was reached ; yesterday up to I wo o'clock 500 were reportod.
