July 21. —The storm on the coast of Nowfoundland and Labrador, destroyed 325 fishing smacks, 23 dwellings, 40 stores, and 300,800 dollars worth of other property. Many lives wore lost. July 22. —An explosion took place at the Government Arsenal, Washington. Damage, 100,000 dollars. No lives lost.
July 26.—Horse epidemic is breaking out with renewed violence at New York.
July 30.—Staten Islnnd extra ferry steamer Wostfield exploded in New York harbour. 100 lives lost. Many passengers injured.
Election in Mexico in. doubt, and the choice of President will likfly devolve on Congress, with ths chances in favour of the re-election of Juarez. ' ■
July 31.—Intelligence has been receivd of the distruotion of the City Point-o-Pitre Island of Guadeloupe, W/l". 30,000 people have beon rendered homeless.
August 2.—lt is understood that Charles Francis Adam Laa, American Minister to England, will b» appointed American representative to conference of Geneva.
Phoobe Carey, the poetess, died in New York.
