Some convef! sation then took place respecting the addresses which candidates might be allowed to make, and eventually it was decided that a show of hands should first take place, each candidate present appoint, ing a scrutineer, aud that afterwards each candidate might address the meeting for five minutes at most. The follotfinj; gentlemen were appointed to count the hands :—For Mr. Manton, Mr. Pettierbridge ; for Mr. K. S. Smith, Mr. McCul. loch ; for Dr. Hyley, Mr; Woodhouse • for Mr. W. Brown, Mr. Towson j" for Mr, Somner, Mr. Cusack ; for Mr. Levy, Mr! Ncimann. The show of hau'ds was then taken, the numbers being—Manton, 46• Brown, 30 ; ltyley, 27; Somner, 25 j Morgan, 20 ; Levy, 16 ; Smith, 8 j Murray, 0. The numbers were received with loud applause. An objection to Mr. Murray's name was .started on the ground of non qualification, hut after some argument the election was allowed to proceed ; a protest, however, being entered by Mr. Cusack, seconded by Mr. Petherbridge. A poll was demanded, and iite, suited in the election of Mr. Manton and Mr. Levy—the former polling 122, and the latter 81. Mr. Smith was lowest, with 39, The successful candidates then returned thanks for the honor conferred;;upon, them, aud Dr. .Kyley and Mr. Manton received an ovation from a choice selection of their admirers. They were severally taken upon the shoulders of stalwart " reds," and carried in triumph to Mantou's Hotel, where the doctor had the honor of pgain addressing themon; the felicitous results of the polling, and also of treating them to any quantity of " square."
