AUCKLAND TO NAPIER, OVERLAND.
The übiquitous Mr." Locke arrived from tha Waikato via Auckland, en. route fi>r Napier, after having succeeded most successfuHy (for there is nothing so successfuUas sucoew) in solving the knotty problem' of opening an inland road by Cambridge and Taupo, so as eventually to connect Auckland With Hawke's Bay. Setting aside the social and commercial interests involved, the' political aspect of things, so far as relates to our difficulties wiih the natives, "will be materially brightened. The auka'ti which the Ngatiraukawa, as a turbulent tribe, put upon this road has, by this gentleman's influence, been removed. Of course, much remains yet to be done, but it ia assuring to know that the inimical attitude of so powerful a section of natives inland has been toned down, to say no move, .to an acknowledgment uf the blessings .of peace. Mr Locke is somewhat confident of even further success in this direction ; and I believe that your enterprising firm, Messrs. Quick', can take courage now, and proceed on their long promised way. rejoicing. From what I learn, "even this achievement does not settle the overland postal difficulty, and you will have to wait still further the goodness 'of the gods. As the Defence Minister entertained grave doubts as to the possibility of anyono, save himself, encountering these tribes and. surviving, I would suggest that Mr. Locke's'next mission be to his Arch- Highness Te Hira, and hie accomplished sister Princess Sophia, and let him try his hanrl a!; the Ohinemuri affair.
