We have received the following, ■which, on the authority of the gentleman that has written it, we believe. We think we are the " Auckland papers" alluded to, an:> plead guilty to the soft impeachment. We are glad, for the credit of Mr. Swan, that his hands are clean from the disreputable conduct of this little print in bearing and bulling the share market: —" To the Editor : Sir, —To prevent mistakes, and to avoid blame being cast on the wrong shoulders, allow me respectfully to state that the late member for the Thames, W. T. Swan, Esq., has never been, nor is now, the Thames Correspondent of the Morning News. As some of the Auckland papers have been giving him the credit of injuring the field by telegram, I think it only fa;r to take this opportunity of denying it.—Yours, &c, one who Knows."
In ati advertisement in one of our morning contemporaries we observe a new style of business ha 3 been announced in this city. The business has indeed been carried on previously, but tkis, wo believe, ia the first instance of a firm having the manliness to define its speciality. In the notice referred to we nre informed that " the business of sharekrokers and land agents will be carried on under the name of and son." This line of operations has been hitherto carried on almost exclusively in the office of our contemporary the News, and on the principles of Mark Tapley we congratulate ourselves- on the extension of the " dismal" business.
We have much pleasure in directing tbo steps of hungry citizeus and strangers to the United States Dining Rooms, in Lower Queen-street. It has just passed into the hands of Mr. Byers, and we have no doubt that every effort will be made to satisfy tlio cravings of nature, and to make friends and patrons as • comfortable as possible while partaking of refreshment. From what we know of Mr. Byers, we do not hesitate to say that ho will give very great satisfaction.
There will be some alteration in the coustitution of the Harbour Board, consequent on the late elections of Highway Boards. Mr. S. Jones retains his seat at the Harbour Board as Chairman of the Dedwood Highway Board, but Mr. Smart, late Chairman in the ParnelL District, and Mr. Cochrano, late Chairman in the Devonport District, retire in favour of Mr. Dargaville, the newly elect of Parnell, and Mr. Niccol, the elected of Devonport, who will now c.v officio take their seats at the Auckland' Harbour Board.
Tho Treasurer of tho Home for Neglected end Destitute Children begs to acknowledge the contribution of £10 from Mr. Charles Alexander. This contribution constitutes Mr. Aloxahder a life member of the society.
