BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A.N ordinary meeting of the City Council was held tliis clay, when the following members were present:—llia Worship the Mayor (in (.lie clmii1), Councillors Atkin, George, Asher, Hampton, Macieudy, Bugdon, Stuines, and Tonka.
Eden-street. —Residents in this street coJipluitied of the state of Iho rood.—Councillor Asher, seconded by Councillor Q-eorge moved that tho petition be received.— Carried.
-ViOToniA-sTiiKET.—The state of Victoriastreet near Chapel-street was made tho subject of complaint by some residents.—The petition was received.
Lamps. —A letter from tho Gras Company witli reference to the removal of iamps was received. In future the amount of cost of removal will be charged by the company agniust the Council. —A number of residents in Edwardes - street requested that a lamp be erocted at ° the junction of Edwardes-etrect and Queen-street, was received on. the mo'ion of Councillor Asher, seconded by Councillor Bugden.
Dooe-STREET. —A potition, presented by Councillor Q-eorge, from tho inhabitants of Dock-street, near Hardinge-streot, requesting a few loads of scoria, was received.
Paving Queen-street.—A pttition from a number of shopkeepers in Queen-street, requesting that tho cost of paving the footpaths in Queen street be equally divided between tho Corporation and owners of land facing the street. The following reasons were assigned : —l. Tho owners of land are the persons who would be benefited. 2. The public will be benefited, and therefore should contributo their share by means of on equitable tax levied by tho Council. 3. That long leases should notb*> permitted to intorfoi c with the general rule, as landlords are supposed to take all probable improvements into consideration beforo granting a lease. Tho petition was received, on tho motion of Councillor Atkin, seconded by Councillor Bugden, and consideration was deferred until tho whole subject was brought before the Council.
This Councit, Contractor.—A petition from Mr. Itice, contractor for carting scoria, complaining of hardship to which ho had been subjected, was received.
The Valuer. —A letter from Mr. Fraser, City Valuer, was received.—Councillor Slaines considered tho letl.er amounted to a resignation. Ho would move that Mr. Diddams bo instructed to proceed with the present valuation.—Councillor Mocroady seconded the motion, which was agreed to.
Town Cuieh.—A gentloman of long experience in this line, with or without bell, applied for engagement.—The letter was laid on the table.
