BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual monthly meeting of the 'Board of Education was held yesterday afternoon, at ,tlie Superintendent's office. Present : His Honor the Superintendent (in the chair), and Messrs Hurst, Sheohan, P. A. Philips O'Roi-ke, and O'Sulliyan (Seoretary). ' . PoBT Albebt. —An application to lease one of the school reserves at Port Albert was made. It was wanted for the erection of a Temperance Hotel. It was resolved that the reserve should be leased for seven years, at £3

a-year. Dbill.—lt was resolved to give 5s per week towards the instruction in drill of boys belonging to the Common School ; tae number of hoys drilled at each school, and to be paid for by the Board, not to exceed fifteen. , Repoet csr Schools.—The Inspector or Schools read a report as to the condition of several schools about and near the town, where Q-overnmcnfc aid was allowed. Onehunga.— An application was received from St. Joseph's School at Onohunga, asking for assistance for twenty girls, —thirteen for the previous quarter, seven for this. Shortland. —An application from the Presbyterian School, Shortland, asking for assistance, was ordered to stand over for consideration.

St. Paul's ScnooL.—An application was received for assistance for fourteen boys whose parents are unable to pay for their education. The application was granted. Mr. Taylor's Blue School, WELLESUsrSteeet. —Application was made for assistance to educate six boys at this school. Granted. Wanqatioa (Raglan).— Application was received from ltaglan for the sum of £200 to build a school-house. Also, for the euro of £90 annually, the inhabitants of the district to provide £45 as school fees. It was resolved, that a sum not exceeding £50 be granted for a teacher. With regard to the application for £200 for a school and teacher's house, the Board agreed to grant £75 for the purpose of building a school-house aud teacher's house, the schoolroom to be not less than 32 feet by 20, with a fireplace in it. Matakouk—The sum of £50 was granted to this district towavds building a schoolhouse.

Tauranga.—An application for £175 was received from Tauranga for the purpose of building a school-house. It was resolved to grant the sum of £100, subject to a plan submitted to the approval of the Board. Papaboa.—A grant of £50 was made to this district for school purposes. Cambeidge.—An application for a sum of money to build a school-house at Cambridge was ordered to stand over.

Taipa, Mongontti.—A sum of £35 was gi-anted for this district. Pom ArBKRT.—It appears that there is some doubt as to which is the best placo to build a school for this district. The application for assistance was ordered to stand over until a meeting of the inhabitants had been convened to decide definitely upon the site of the school.

Hamilton.—The sum of £15 wa9 granted for a female assistant at the school in this district.

Tuakatt.—A sum of £30 wa3 granted to the school ia tins district.

Mauktt. —The sum of £5 was granted to the school at Mauku for the purchase of books, maps, &c. Mangai'ai.—A grant of £1 10s was made for a similar purpose to the school in this district. Matakana.—The same. OnuAWHAito. —A grant of £15 was made for the school iv this district, at which there, are nine children. Eawakawa.—The appointment of Mr. Chatfield. as teacbor of this school was sanctioned by the Board. Waimate.—The appointment of the female teacher at the school in this district was sanctioned.

Hokianga.—lt Wf«s resolved to leo<ie four Education Eeserve lots at this placo to Mr. Kelly of Herd's Point.

Hastings (Tapu).—The sum of £10 was granted towards the purchase of school furniture for the school at this place. An application for £20 towards tho building of a school was ordered to stand over.

Accounts.—The usual accountswere passed, after .which the Board adjourned.
