BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnighly meeting of the Borough Council was held this afternoon at the oflice, Canada Buildings, when the following members were present:—The Mayor (P. A. Philips, Esq.), and Councillors Atkin, Asher, George, Bugdeu, Hampton. The minutes ot the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Bt-I/AWS.— Councillor George said be would move that the resolution in reference to the passing of certain by-laws be rescinded^ so that the Council might get .the opinion ot the Attorney-General.—The Mayor said that notice must be given of any resolution to rescind any former resolution. —Councillor Maeready thought it would be welt if the Council would spend £100 in getting a thoroughly good Corporation Act passed through the House. — The matter then dropped. Coebespondence.—Letters were road from various ratepayers, and the following resolutions were come to on the subject:—A complaint was received from a resident of Oakleystreet. It was stated that the street was .a private street. The letter was received. A letter was read from • the of the Harbour Board, stating' that thewhole of Customhouse-street was rented by the Borough Council, which must accordingly bear all expenses in connection with the repairing the same.—A letter was read from. Messrs. Cooke and Byone, offering to supply Mungawai flagging at the rate of Is 6d per square foot. The letter was received.—A letter was. read from _ the Gas Company, stating that a' gas lamp had been erected and lighted at the corner of Chancerv-gtreet.—A letter was received (said by the Chairman to be from Mr. Staines), asking the Council to look at Morton-street and make arrangements for improving it. The letter was signed " A Residenter."—Mr. Smart moved that the letter be not received, as no name was subscribed.—Agreed to.—A letter from Mr. Fernandez, of the Boyal Hotel, in reference to the state of the roadway in his vicinity, was ordered to lie upon the table. —A letter was read from Mr. James Wright, asking to be relieved from his contract as carter to the Council.—On the motion of Mr. Maeready, it was resolved not to entertain tho application.—A petition was received from the residents of Cook-street, asking that the Council would do something to this street, which the petitioners stated was in a dangerous condition. —The Foreman of Works was directed to look into the matter.
