ARRIVAL OF THE S.S. 'HERO'
LATEST AUSTRALIAN TELEGRAMS.
The favorite s.s. Hero, Captain Logan, arrived in harbour this morning, bringing a very large cargo and about 70 passengers.
We have received files from Sydney to the 20th, from which wc take the following :—
MELBOURNE
May 13.—The commercial intelligence received by the mail has had a favorable effect upon the markets.—A man named Lalor, formerly a locker in the Customs department, has been arrested on suspicion of having perpetrated the robberies of opium and kerosine from the bonded stores, by means of duplicate keys. A considerable quantity of the plunder has been recovered.—Flour firm at £16 to £17.
May 1.5. —There is to be a Civic demonstration in honor of the marriage of the Princess Louise with the Marquis of Lome.—Hugh Glass died to-day ; he wus 66 years old. — Breadstuff's are firm ; sugars are in demand ; £28,000 of Customs' duties have been paid today, chiefly on tobacco, coffee, aud oil, in anticipation of the new tariff' coming into force to-morrow.
May 16. —The detectives have recovered nearly all the kerosene and opium stolen from the bonded stores in the possession of Daniel Lalor, a locker, who is remanded to Eriday. Lalor has been nineteen years in the service, and has a large family of sons grown up ; one is an architect, another an engineer, very respectable.—Mr. Patrick M'Gill, an old colonist, was buried to-day.—Elour is quoted at £16 to £17 ; brandies are dearer, Honnessy's is quoted at 7s 6d in bond; sugars are selling freely. — £30,000 were paid for Customs' duties to-day.
May 18. —rihe Bank of New South Wales Amendment Bill has been read a first time, Mr. Yale intimating that he would oppose more than five years' extension of the charter, so as to allow of the whole banking system being dealt with.—Charles Johnson was arrested on board the You Yfmgs (s.), charged with forgery.—Breadstuff's are firm ; sugars have been inquired for ; there has been some speculation in brandies.—The barque Clara and Cail, from Mauritius, brings 330 tons sugars ; she reports one vessel loading for the colonies.
May 19.—The duty on imported leaf tobacco interferes with its manufacture here. Two firms decline further orders until the tariff is settled. —Kennedy aud M'Donald have arranged with their creditors and resumed business.—loo tons of Tasmanian Hour sold at £15 ; Adelaide wheat, 7s. 7d. to 7s. Bd. Teas are selling freely. Sugars sold at a slight decline. —Daniel Lalor has been committed for trial for the bonded store robbery.
