DEVONPORT RIFLE CORPS.

It may bo remembered that a meeting was held, about a month ago, to take preliminary steps towards raising a Volunteer Rifle Corps in tbe Devonport District, North Shore. On that occasion the names of 23 persons were enrolled. In accordance with a resolution then passed, drill has been held twice a-week up to last evening, when a meeting was held for the purpose of enrolling new members, electing officers, and offering the services of the corps to the Governor. At the time appointed there was a largo attendance, and W. B. Barber, Esq., having been voted to the chair, explained the objects of the meeting, after which a roll of the proposed corps was taken, and the number enrolled amounted to thirty-two.—The following resolutions -were then proposed, and carried unanimously ••— ''That this corps shall'be called the Devonport Volunteer Rifle Corps." "That Mr. William Buchanan be appointed Captain." " That Mr. Thomas Niccol be appointed Lieutenant." " That Mr. Robert Wynyard be appointed Ensign." " That a committee be formed, to be consist of the officers of the corps and four members, viz., Messrs. William Cochrane, Gerard, Goldie, and Legget, to draw up rules, and to undertake the general management of the corps."-— The Captain elect was then requested to offer the services of the corps to the Governor, and the question of uniform to be adopted was deferred until after His Excellency's acceptance shall have been announced. After a vote of thanks to the chair, the meeting, which was on the whole highly successful, then broke up. We see no,reason why this corps should not prove a valuable adjunct to the other corps in the province.
