POLICE COURT—Saturday.
[Before J. O'Neill and W. Graham, Esqs., Justices.l Dbtjnkenness.—Four persons were punished as usual for this offence. Vagrancy.—Jane Goldsmith, against whom a long catalogue of offences had been recorded, was sent to gaol for a month as a vagrant. Municipal Police.—Emma H. Stainson was charged with breaking two panes of glass, value 205., in the window of the Empire hotel. Pleaded guilty, and was ordered to pay a fine of 40s. and costs, or to be imprisoned ■ one month. Assault.—ln the case of assault in which Ringiora was 'charged with having violently beaten Mrs. Hale, and which has been dismissed without prejudice, Mr. Wynn for the prosecutrix, stated that the Maori had absconded, and was supposed to have gone to the Upper Thames; he, therefore, applied for a warrant, which was ordered to issue.—John Smyth was charged by his wife Catherine with assault. —Prosecutrix deposed that her husband was in the habit of coming home drunk and beating her. On the 27th April he came home and turned her out of the house, and began to beat the children. She forced her way into the house again, and he violently assaulted her. From his violent conduct she was afraid to return to her home. —The defendant promised to abstain from drink if leniently dealt with, and his wife expressed her desire that he should not be punished. He was ordered to find two sureties in £10 each, and give his own bond in £20 to keep the peace for one month.
