In the Resident Magistrate's Court, on Wednesday, before C. Mellsop, i-L-q., E. M., the following cases were heard : — Breach op Wateemen's Begulations.— James Neville was charged for plying for hire without a licence.—Mr. Matthews appeared for nefendant, (who pleaded not guilty,) and tool< somo technical objection to tho summons ; the Court ruled to dismiss the ease, b(fc*ithout> costs. Mr. Matthews then witlidrd^Blb objection, and the case proceeded on ended summons.—Thomas Sharpe deposed : I am a licensed waterman plying in the Manukau, on the 15th April defendant was taking passengers repeatedly in his boat from the wharf to the s.s Phoebe, when lying ufc iheEluff. I complained to the ITarbor-master, as directed by the waterman's regulations, and made the present complaint.—Mr. Matthews here raised an objection that the information charged the defendant with a b .each of regulations 0f'1866, and handed in a gazette dated 1870. The Court held the objection fatal, and dismissed the case, with costs of Court, not allowing fees of counsel. Felony.—John Clarkson was charged on the information of Albert Robinson with killing and stealing a pig. On the application of detective Jeffrey the caso was adjourned for one week. Assault.—lsabella Conlon, of Howick, was charged with assaulting Mary Kerr.—Complainant stated that she was near her own door, minding.turkeys, when defendant came up, threatening her violently, and using abusive language. She also 'threatened to leave her a corpse where she stood ; she then drew out a butcher's knife, and struck at her with it. The knife penetrated a shawl, which was wrapped round a baby in her arni3. (Tho shawl was produced, with a cut in it, and also the knife.—The Court said the case was aggravated, and might have been sent to the Supreme Court, but defendant would Ije treated more leniently, and fined 20s. and costs, or one month's imprisonment, and to find surety for six months.
