MINING MATTERS

[FROM TO-DAY'S " THAMES ADVEETISEK."] Amalgamation of Claims.—lt is rumored that an extensive amalgamation of claims in the Punga Flat district is about to take place. The Alburnia, Pride of the West, Star of the South, and several others are, it is said, to be formed into a company on a good basis, to work the ground effectively and systematically. Should the proposed arrangements be carried out there can be no doubt they ■will be advantageous to the companies now working the different mines. In their present position none of the companies occupy sufficient area of ground to warrant the erection of mining machinery for the carrying out of extensive mining operations, sucli as could be entered into by a good company formed to work the amalgamated claims. Tire CTolden Cbovtx.—Some of the finest stone that lias been taken out of the Goldeu Crown mine for a long time, was brought to the surface yesterday morning, from the splendid new reef. The rich run of gold which was struck in this reef on Monday night, appears to increase in richness as it is driven on towards the boundary. The find, although a highly important one with regard f.o the Golden Crown, is equally so in respect lo the adjoining claims. The reef is of a fine solid description, and is thickly impregnated, with othor minerals, such as copper, iron, antimony, mundic, &c, and bears, in many respects, a striking similarity to No. 1 reef, which has already proved its richness in the Caledonian and Golden Crown mines. It varies in size from six to twelve feet, and at the place where the gold has now been struck ' has taken a bend to the northward. The Waitesiata—The reef struck a short time ago in the prospecting drive, to the eastward of the slide, which cut through and displaced the wholo lny of the country in the Waitemal n mirjc, has a promising aspect. It has been driven in a distance of 9 feet, but the foot-wall has not yet been reached. No gold has yet been seen in the stone.
