DEATH OF CAPTAIN GUILDING.
It is with sincere regret we have to announce the death of Captain Guilding, which took place about midnight last night. The deceased gentleman, who was a native of Auckland, had been eleven years a member of tbe Naval Volunteers, during nine of which he had occupied the post of captain, and was deservedly esteemed for his urbanity and kindly disposition. During his term of office ho had seen some active service, and in his civil capacity occupied the position of Assistant Wharfinger, in which office he had gained many friends, having attracted to himself the friendship of all those with whom he came in contact. The deceased gentleman —who was in the prime of manhood, being only twenty eight years of age—had been suffering for some time from congestion of the liver, and his death, though so regretted, was not unexpected, it being generally known for a considerable time past that he was not likely to recover. During to-d»y the flags of vessels at the wharf have been flying half-mast high in token of respect for the deceased ; and as Captain Guilding (in addition to his other officers), was a member of the Waitemata Lodge of Free Masons, all the lodges in the city, as well as the Volunteers, will follow in procession to the grave. The funeral is to ta-ke place tomorrow at half-past three, and from the sincere respect and esteem in which the deceased was held, we have no donbt that a very large number of citizens will unite in paying the last tribute of respect to Captain Guilding.
