VOLUNTEERING BEING- AT THE NORTH SHORE.
A wem attended meeting of the inhabitants of the North Shore was held at the Devonport Hall on Monday evening. Mr. David Burn occupied the chuir. A number of speeches were made, and at the close of the meeting twenty-three names were enrolled by youns men willing to form themselves into a Volunteer force. It is not yet decided whether the force shall be an artillery, rifle, or engineer corps; that is a matter which ia to be left to the future. It is^ intended to hold two drills awook for the noxt. month to como, and if at the end of that time it is found that tho men are really in oarnest, then they will be organized iv the usual way, and enrolled as a regular rifle corps. Our own opinion is that they
should be embodied in the shape of an artillery corps, with a battery on the North Head, where, in case of a visit from hostile vessels, they might be of some service.
