THE FILIBUSTERING EXPEDITION FOR AUSTRALIA.
GOLD SHIPS TO BE INTERCEPTED.
A private telegram has been sent from the Imperial Government to the Earl of Belmore, Sydney, to the effect that advices had been received from America of the probable departure from the States of a Filibustering Expedition bound for the Australian Colonies, with a view to intercept the gold shipa when on their way to England. The telegram further stated that a visit to Sydney is included in the design.
"200" additional rren have been put on to hurry forward the fortifications and to place the guns in position. Sir Juines Martin snd the other members of the Government have gone down for a special inspection of the defences. It is stated that E. C. Cracknell, Esq., Superintendent of Telegrams, haa been in communication with the Government and the Commodorp, and that special instructions have been issued to all the coast telegraph stations to use every vigilance in looking out for strange-looking vessels. We have been favoured by Sir James Martin with the following : — " The British Government has received a statement which they do not ci-edit, but think it ri"ht to send word, that a filibuster expeditions to leave the United States this month for Melbourne, Sydney, and Otago."
