POLICE COURT.—Friday.
[Before T. Macffarlane and J. S. Macfarlane, Esqs., Justices. DBfNttENNBSS.— R. Stevens, for this offence, was fined 5s and coats, or to be imprisoned 24 hours. Q-. Hassel, for being drunk and disorderly, forfeited bail. VA&BAKCT.—EIiza Price, charged with Tagrancy, was sent to gaol for three months. Embezzlement. — "William Knapp mi charged by James Bowe with this offence. —J. Howe deposed: I reside at East Tamaki. Prisoner was my servant since last August. On Saturday, 18th March, sent him to Pemberton, at Epsom, with a load of straw to sell. Did not see him on his return, but late next morning. He told me that he had not been paid. Said that the money on him was received from one Pennell. He did not return to my house. On the 21st inst., I saw him again, and he admitted having received the money. I asked him to coma to my place and work it out. I hare not received the money sincethen.—W. P«mberton deposed : I am a farmer at Epsom. Prisoner brought me a load of straw on the 18th. I paid him 22s 6d. Receipt produced has his signature. Saw him sign it. Detective Jeffrey deposed to the arrest of prisoner, who admitted having taken the money and expressed sorrow. He said if he had not run away his master would have allowed him to work it out.—The prisoner was committed for trial.
