THE PERMISSIVE BILL.
LA33!^f-vening a very largely attended meeting of i< •-,(. ivocates of temperance was held at tlv \£Y-*' 'uiilding at the corner of Hobson anct *~ Afreets. The Rev. Peter Mason was vote^i^Yj^fle chair. Mr. Coupland explained the object of the meeting, which-was, ho said, to endeavour to give effect to-the permissive clause of the new Licensing Act. Ho thought that three members of the committee a! the Alliance should be detailed to canvass each ward in the interest of teetotalism. The financial condition of the Association was satisfactory, being out of debt, with the exception of seven shillings and sixpence for ■ handbills, calling the pretent meeting. Mr. Lamb, of Riverhead, followed, and maide a celling speech. A number of speakers followed, after which several members were added to the committee, which now includes the following names: E. Carr, .J. W. Carr, Hemus, Coupland, Lewis, Swinnerton, • Beale, J. Graham, Nicholas, Viekery, Spragg, Mason, Jeane, Seabrooke, Webster, Tremaine, Wells, Hughe3, Bonher, Cherry, Devlin, Black, Hurst, Payne, R. Payne, J. W. Ellis, Gledhill, W. Wood, McPherson, James Carr, Lamb, Page, Newman, Bond, Clark, Roebuck, J. Mason, and R. Downing. A motion having been carried pledging the membei-3 of the com-mittee--to do then- best to reduce the liquor traffic, the proceedig3 terminated.
