LATE NEWS FROM THE SOUTH.
By the s.s. Star of the South we have received ETawkes1 Bay papers to the evening of the ICth. We take the following fron the Daily Telegraph: —
DUNEDIN.
February 10.—The election for the Superintendent took place .to-day. Both 6ides working hard. Reid's party published a letter, purporting to be written by Driver to Treewick referring to Macandrew. Damaging, if true. Driver denies writing the letter, and comprinter. The case camo on to-day, Macassey arid Smith prosecuting; Barton defending. Adjourned for a week. The Telegraph says : —" We very much regret to state that the telegrams concerning the insanity of Mr. Commissioner Branigan have been confirmed. "While wo sympathise deeply with the unfortunate gentleman, and hope for him a speedy recovery, we trust that the Government will use no delay in appointing hia successor. These are not the times for false delicacy, aud, in view of the threatening state of affairs in the Waikato, and certainty of any complications there extending to Taupo, it behoves the ruling powers to have a competent man at the head of the Constabulary. Luckily both Colonel Lyon and Colonel Moule are available.
