PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.

In the Provincial Council yesterday the Education Bill 1871, was thrown out, and the following measures were passed, for Education Management Reserve, Habrour Board. Sheep Act, Eemulation of Brands, and the G-rahamstown Firs Bate Bill. The Hospital Bill was shelved, and Mr- Shcehan's promised measure to be passed through on Tuesday, with reference to the Eawakawa coal mines. The Council then adjourned till Tuesday, on which day the Council will be prorogued.

POLICE COURT;— Saturday. (Before A. Clark, Esq., and Colonel Balneavis Justices.)

Drunkenness.—A. McMillan forfeited his bail.

Stealing from a Dwelling-house.— Maurice Walsh was charged with stealing from the "residence of Matthew Gill, Waitemata Mill?, on the 27th inst., one pair boots and one shirt, value 265. The prisoner pleaded guilty.—The Bench sentenced him to one month's imprisonment with hard labor. Assault. —James Hennessey was charged by G. E. Hay with assaulting him, by kicking him on the chest.- The Bench, after hearing the evidence, dismissed the case.

Provoking* Language.—Mary Elcock was charged by J. Donovan with using provoking and insulting language. The defendant not appearing, and service of summons not proved, another summons was issued for defendant to appear on Wednesday next

Breach oe Contract.—Thomas Williams, George Thomas, and Robert Mackintosh were charged by the Bay of Islands Coal Company with a breach of contract by refusing to work on the 20th January, 1871. —Detective Pardy applied for an adjournment to the 6th February, which the Bench granted, the accused being admitted to bail in their own recognizances.—The Court then rose.
