THE CITY OF AUCKLAND.
We regret to inform our readers that up to the time we write the City of Auckland is still under water. At 12 o'clock on Tuesday night Messrs. Niccol and Son, tbe contractors, commenced work, by filling up tho holes which had been made on the previous day. The foremast hole was thoroughly stopped, and the other partially. At 2 p.m. a strong gang of men commenced to pump her out, and continued until 7.30 a.m., when the vessel shifted into deeper water with the tide. At full tide the cabin was full of water, and everything in it completely destroyed. Mr. George Ellis, engineer, succeeded in starting the engine, which had been previously covered with water, and during the day the two main pumps and fire engines were kept constantly at work. Yesterday morning a diving dress was obtained from the shore, and William Grant went below and effectually stopped up the other hole. Captain Ashby's crew worked hard throughout, giving every assistance to Mr. Niccol. At six o'clock last evening, the water was considerably reduced, and at eight o'clock Captain Fairchild very kindly took the p.s. Luna alongside, hoping to move her more inshore. The attempt, however, was fruitless, and work was discontinued for the night. We understand that to-day some CaKfornian pumps will be brought into requisition, whon it is hoped the ship will be safely raised and brought to the wharf.—" Herald."
