THE UNEMPLOYED.

bTCIKE AT THE BAY OF ISLANDS.

Now that we are having formed in our midst a " Working Man's Protection Association," the news from the Eawakawa coal mines is opportune, as showing how such "Protection" works. The proprietors of those mines brought up from the '1 names twenty miners at a slightly reduced rate of wages. Un their arrival at the Bay the men were so intimidated by the demonstration made for r,he " Protection " of their interests by the miners in possession, and by the threats held out if they should dare to enter the mines, that the men from the '1 names determined to return, and are now on their way back to Auckland. TVe sincerely trust that the company will peremptorily sack every one of the miners at £awakawa, and that those men will receive that sympathy which their outrageous conduct deserves.
