This Day
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Board wns held to-day. Present—Messrs. P. A. Philips (chairman), George, Macready, Atkin, Staines, Hampton, Bugden, Sceats, Aslier.
The Secretary read the minutes of the previous meeting, which were confirmed.
Petitions. —Petitions from several streets were received, praying tlint alterations might be made, earth removed, &c.
New Rates.—Mr. G-eorge gave notice that he would move, next sitting-day, " That a general rate of sixpence, and a sewerage rate of one shilling bo struck at the next meeting."
Mabket Reserve.—Mr. Philips asked the views of the Board on this very important question.—Mr. Staines regretted that the subject had not been discussed iifc the Board before action was taken in the Council. He could not understand why discussion should have been stifled.- —Mr. Atkin said the question had received a good dual of attention. The question was a purely city one, because the city would receive the tolls. It was not to the purpose to say that because a market had failed in Wellington one should not be erected here. lie was lately convinced of the necessity. He would, therefore, move, "That the City Board of Commissioners now sitting do hereby agree, after the repeal of the City Loan Act, to erect a suitable markethouse, aud make the same a first work of the Corporation, shortly to be granted to the city of Auckland."—Mr. Hampton seconded the amendment. —Mr. Macready complained that the remarks made by the papers were untrue. He alluded to the Hebild. A graat deal of unjust abuse had been heaped on the members of the Board. The property was mortgaged : the city had no power over it. It would take £1200 to cut down the place. He regretted he was not present when Mr. Dyer's motion came on, as he had been kept up at the Council until between three and four o'clock, and the motion of Mr. Dyer came on out of its turn owing to the lateness of other motions. It would cost £1400 to make approaches.—Mr. Staines thought the action taken by Messrs. Dyer and Murray, in the Council, was worth t the highest praise, and supported the motion. —The motion was carried unanimously.
Tenders foe Carting Road Metal, &c. —Tenders were opened, the tender of James Rice was accepted, this contractor failing the tender of Mr. Lupton to be accepted.—Mr. Hampton said that some of the sweepings were deposited in boxes which it would take two more people to lift.—The Chairman said the contractor wus not required to lift those large boxes, but he was anxious to please.— The fortnightly accounts were passed and the business concluded.
