A writer on horticulture, in the Australasian, observes :—" Unless English raisers of beautiful and gaudy summer flowers are applying themselves successfully to the work of raising new varieties, the horticultural public will probably, miss its usual supply next yenr, if not also for several next years ia succession. This lamentable war has destroyed the market gardens and nurseries in the suburbs of Paris, and amongst them in all probability those of Souchet, who has given to the world so many of the finest varieties of gladioli. The great rose-growers, too, will have lost the labours of their whole lives, and in double pelargoniums no further novelties can be expected, since Surcncs, where the finest have been raised, hns been trampled under foot. Australian nurserymen should look to these things and endeavour to fill the blank. Our climate is equal to that of France for raising new roses, new gladioli, and new flowers of all those kinds that require a warmer climate and a brighter sun than England can supply."

The first annual exhibition of the Society oe Artists, Auckland, will bo held at the City Hall, Queen street, in February next. Works intended for the exhibition will be received at the hall on (he loth February, and the five following days.
