MELBOURNE.
December 29.—The Publicans' Bill passed both Houses. Beer licenses are abolished,* and licenses for country hotels are reduced to £10. Concert and dancing saloons are pro-: hibited in connection with public-houses. —j Parliament is prorogued to the end of January. —The G-overnor has assented to the Payment of Members, Publicans, and Married Women's Property Acts," and others. —A Commercial Travellers' Association has been formed, and forty members enrolled.—The. harvest prospects are everywhere reported to be good. —The cargo of Mauritius sugar, ex Alsager, over 9000 bags, was sold to-day :. brown, 34s to 34s 9d ; white counters, 36s to 38s 6d. —The Jan Van Galen's Java sugar brought 40s 6d to 41s.—Maize is steady, at 43.
December 30.—Nimblefoot is the favorite, for the Midsummer Handicap.—Louis Joshua Lee has been remanded for a week on a) chai'ge of fraudulent insolvency.—The flour market closed firmer, and a few tons were sold up to £13 ; maize is quoted at 4s. 2d.; there have been some speculations in malt at 7s. 6d. ; teas sold at full rates.
