December 27-—The Melbourne University won the cricket match with two wickets to fall. December 28. —The Protection League have elected office-bearers, preparatory to the agitation during tho general elections. —The Assemb'.y read the new Publicans' Bill, based on compromise with the Upper House, a second time, and it is intended that it shall pass both Hou.es to-night, with the view of prorogation to-morrow.—The Board of; inquiry into the charges against Inspector Lyttelton has commenced taking evidence. — The Navigation Board acquitted Captain Davis, of the Cardigan Castle, of the charge of neglecting to rescue the thirdjinate, who was drowned on the passage.—William Stevans, son of Major Stevens, has been sentenced to three months' imprisonment for larceny.—Flour, £12 103.; wheat, 7s. 6d. to^ ss. 8d. —The Golden Lake claim, at Avoca,* turned out a fifty-four ounce nugget to-day.
