The Evening Star. MONDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1870.
We understand that the brig Annie Browu may be expected here in a tew days from Mnuritius with a cargo of sugar. The Volunteer Band played on the Government House lawn, on Saturday afternoon. A large number of people were present, and the musical selections, which ware performed in first-class style, were much enjoyed. The regular monthly meeting of Lodge Waiteinata, 689 E.C., will take place this evening. . Cremorne Gardens will be open on Boxing and the following days. An entertainment in aid of the Drum and Fife Band of the Band of Hope Union will be held in the Pavnell Hall this evening. A meeting of licensed victuallers will be held at the Thames Hotel this eTening, to consider the ne .v Licensing Bill, now before the Council. t A clever capture vms effected at Point Russell on Friday morning, by Constable Caddell, of the Armed Constabulary. Some days ago o -watch -was stolen from Messrs. Quijk's stable?, and up to this morning no trace could be found of the thief. Constable Caddell, however, appears to have had his suspicions of a carpenter named Belford, who has b>~en employed at the Point Russell Hotel for some days back, and on Belford going on board the steamer, searched him and his swag, without finding the properly. Belford had a carpet-bag in his possession which ho said had been left in his charge by a mate who had taken the key nway. The constable retained possession of the bag, and succeeded iv getting a key to open if, when the stolen watch was found*, together with several things of .Vlr. fnnis's. The constable at once procured a horse, and started full speed after the steamer and succeeded in overtaking her at Kangivrivi nnd arresting Belford, whom he brought to the Point this afternoon and lodged in his own quarters. It is high time that the Government did something iv the way of giving us a lock-up hero, as there is no place whatever to put either Maori or pakelm prisoner in, except the constable's sleeping room. — [" Herald's" Correspondent.] The anniversary sermons of the High-street OonjiregntionAl Sunday-school were preached yesteulay by the Rev. Warlow Davies and the Key. R. F. McNicel. There was a large attendance of persons on both occasions.
