LOSS BY FIRE OF THE SHIP MALABAR, OF GREENOCK.
Last week, the loss by fire of tho ship Malabar, of Greenock, was reported. The owner, Mr. John Kerr, Greenock, is in receipt of a telegram from Captain Galloway, dated Bombay, September 22 (Thursday), which states that the lire took place on 26th July, while the ship was in Int. 25 S., long. 32 W. All the officers and crew (29 all told) were saved in the boats, but they lost everything belonging to them, chronometers excepted. The mate and fifteen of the crew were picked up by the ship Europa, which was bound for Beypore, while Captain Galloway and the rest of the crew were rescued by the ship James A. Wright, and landed at Bombay. Captain Galloway proceeds home by the first mail steamer.
The Malabar was a splendid iron-built ship of 1200 tons register, 14 years Al at Lloyds, built at Greenock in 1868 by Messrs. Robertson & Co., and sailed on her first voyage in November of same year. She left London for Batavia (Java) on 16th June last, with a cargo of coal on ship's account. She was off the Start on 21st June, and on Bth July she was spoken hi lat. 11 N., long. 27 W.. all well. No details relative to the disaster have as yet been received. Ship and cargo, we believe, were insured.
