ROAD FROM POINT BRITOMART TO RARNELL.

The following important paper was laid on the table of tho Council'last evening:— "'Public Vtork's Office, " M .' "' " Auckland, December 2, 187_». ~,, "Sir.-rT-I have the, honor to furnish, as re.quested, estimates of, the, probable cost of constructing a road from. Point Britomart to the foot of Parnell Hill, on the seaward side of the factory of the Sash and Door Company. ~,,'. J ,have submitted for your consideration two schemes, and estimates of the probable cost of the work, after a careful examination and measurement of the site. '• The first scheme comprises the construction of a sea wall of hard stone, a roadway of 50 feet wide, to be uietalled 30 feet, with the necessary culvert, &c.s\- " This plan would'leave nearly the whole length of the sea walljfitchaim*) avilable for wharfage, and form fk£.g-?odi<_nt.hot exceeding 1 in 12 to the top o^iir&el^Hili. " The second wouldfebevwhoUy constructed of material taken from Point' Britomart. The hardest stone would be used on tho osaward face, pitched to a. slope of three to one, similar to tho Brpakv'. _t«r ( ; a road fifty feet wide, and metalled thirty feet wide, culvert, &c, with the same gradient as the first. If the work were constructed in this manner, it would be done for £12,300. It would last iWny* ydars, but in consequence of the slope required on the seaward side, it could not be ÜBed for wharfage without constructing wharves of wood or stone projecting from it. ,•;; "I have based these estimates upon the present low rates of labor, and have taken fully into consideration the' fasiljt_<_B of obtaining the materials from' Point Britomart. —I have, &c., (Signed): f*H,Airi.BTGUT, I . > ' " Inspector of Works. " His Honor the Superintendent, . "Auc land.'r '
